Future Libraries

I am new to this environment but started out using Arduino UNO (AVR based) Now trying to port over to the ChipKit Uno using 2 libraries from the AVR base one is the new SoftwareSerial library also known as the NewSoftwareSerial library. Is there any attempt to keep the two environments compatible and port such libraries over to the the ChipKit hardware.
I am also trying to use the NMEA library that I ported from the original Wiring environment to the Arduino environment and ultimately I would like to run on the ChipKit. Thanks, Ken
