I looked around, and tried a huge number of fixed that didn't work. It was as corrupted preferences.txt file - which I thought it might be, but I didn't know where to find it.

Under Win7 32 it's at: C:\Users<you_user_Name>\AppData\Roaming\mpide You can just delete the mpide folder. Then the problem goes away.

Thanks for the useful info. I had the same problem and your fix was just the cure! I think my problem started when I was trying to run both the orginal Ardunio.exe software and mpide.exe at the same time.
