I have just received a uc32 and Basic I/O Shield. I set the JP6 and JP8 jumpers to RG2 and RG3 as directed. Both JP5 and JP7 jumpers are in MASTER position (as shipped). JP4 is in RG9 position (as shipped). JP2 is in REG position (as shipped). Both the EEPROM and Temp demos compile, load, and run with output on the serial port as expected. However, neither of the the OLed display demos illuminate the display. The I2C pullup jumpers are present on the I/O Shield. I have tried adding 12v DC on J4 with no effect. Is this board defective?

It sounds like once of them may be. But before I say that for sure, make sure you are using the latest version of MPIDE. I would also try downloading a fresh copy of the library, in case something downloaded incorrectly.

I have downloaded the library twice and examined the code to make certain that nothing was obviously wrong and to look for any opportunities to print some status. Unfortunately, the device is write-only and no chance to troubleshoot a blank display. The version of mpide I am using is dated May 21, 2011. The link was followed from the uC32 page this week and the download has this filename:

The demos came from the Digilent Basic I/O Shield page. And the other two libraries/demos (EEPROM and Temp) work just fine.

I should receive a new shield today and will report.

The replacement Basic I/O Shield arrived. (Thanks, Newark/Element 14!) Plugged it in to the uC32. Attached the USB, and the OLED display lit up showing the OLED demo output. Problem was indeed a bad OLED display on the original shield. Thanks for your help, Ian! :D

Glad the new one works for you!
